Research

While unlike technology the human body does not change with great rapidity, the understanding of it does through research. Dr. Collins' dedication to the advancement of orthopedic and sports medicine is reflected in the research projects he has launched over the years - many of which have been featured by medical associations and in peer-reviewed journals.

His research results have helped gain FDA approval for some new medical devices, while prompting manufacturers of others to reassess the application for which their device was designed.

New imaging techniques pioneered by Dr. Collins recently revealed the integrity of important ligaments in the hand - which can be used to determine the appropriate treatment to both slow and prevent arthritic conditions. With this new insight, a doctor has the potential to determine a patient's vulnerability to future arthritic conditions - enabling treatment plans to be established years earlier and slow joint degeneration.

Dr. Collins was asked to present his most recent findings at the 61st Annual Meeting of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) in Washington, D.C. His presentations included; A Three Dimensional Analysis of the Sigmoid Notch, An Imaging and Anatomic Study of Pisiform/Ulnar Nerve Relationship in Determining the Best Surgical Approach for Pisiform Excision, and A Radial Ridge Excision for Symptomatic Volar Tendon Subluxation Following De Quervain's Release.

This came on the heels of research he presented at the XI Federation of the European Societies for Surgery of the Hand Congress in Glasgow, Scotland and at the Joint Annual Meeting of the ASSH and American Society of Hand Therapists (ASHT) - revealing new imaging techniques and the important relationship between small wrist bones and surrounding nerves in determining the best surgical approach. Dr. Collins is a contributing author in the upcoming 2007-2008 edition of Operative Techniques in Orthopaedic Surgery.
